Dr. Tom Lewis will lead a two-day pilgrimage in Western North Carolina June 15 & 16 to explore the frescos of renowned artist Ben Long. The pilgrimage will tour sites with five Ben Long frescoes. Locations include: Chapel of the Prodigal in Montreat; Sloop Chapel in Crossnor; St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in West Jefferson (above photo); Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Glendale Springs (below); and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Wilkesboro. We will travel as a group, and spend one night at the Holiday Inn Express in West Jefferson, N.C.
The Frescoes Pilgrimage will focus on contemplative exploration of the history and beauty of frescos as art and storytelling. All are welcome to join us, regardless of background.
Prior to the Coronavirus / COVID19 outbreak, the dates for this pilgrimage were planned for earlier in the spring. The current dates in June are intended to give interested pilgrims time to monitor developments with the virus in our area, and decide if joining the pilgrimage makes sense for them. Individuals in good health, who have not been exposed to Coronavirus, can join the pilgrimage. Full refunds will be offered to any cancellations prior to June 10th. Interested pilgrims are encouraged to register now, recognizing their money will be completely refunded if the pilgrimage should be postponed or canceled.

“The Ben Long Frescoes Pilgrimage” will take place June 15 & 16. Spaces are limited, and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis according to registrations. Registration fee for the pilgrimage will be $195 per person, which includes comfortable transportation to all destinations and double occupancy hotel accommodations. (Single occupancy is available at a higher rate; fee does not include lunches or dinner, suggested donations to fresco host churches, or any hotel or restaurant tips — all of which will be up to each pilgrim.)
